
A butcher shop in Cuiabá, Brazil, was shut down on Thursday (Oct. 16) after authorities discovered severe sanitary and hygiene violations, including raw meat stored on the floor and open sewage running inside the facility.

The inspection was carried out jointly by the Consumer Protection Police (Decon) and the Municipal Health Surveillance Department, following repeated complaints from residents and previous fines issued since last year. Despite multiple warnings, the business continued to operate under unsafe and unsanitary conditions, putting consumers’ health at serious risk.

🚫 Health hazards
According to health officials, meat handled and stored in such conditions can easily become contaminated by dangerous bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli, which can cause severe food poisoning, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and in extreme cases, death.
The presence of open sewage and dirt on the floor greatly increases the risk of cross-contamination, making the products completely unfit for human consumption.
Experts warn that consuming contaminated meat can lead to serious infections, particularly in children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.
⚖️ Legal action
The Civil Police opened an investigation to determine the legal responsibility of the shop’s owners, who may face charges for crimes against consumer health, public endangerment, and selling unsafe food products — all punishable under Brazil’s Consumer Protection Code and the Criminal Code.
